Dear Delegates, MUN directors, Chairs and Members of the MUN community,
It is an absolute honour to welcome you all to the third edition of the International Model United Nations of BetàniaPatmos, on behalf of all the Organizing Team. As many of us know first-hand, an MUN conference is not merely a debate or a simulation; it’s an experience that makes us grow intrinsically.
Two years ago, a group of students from our school, BetàniaPatmos, took the initiative to create our own international MUN, building on a tireless tradition of such experiences that still lives on, and which I sincerely hope will continue, in our school. This year, our goal is not only to celebrate the third edition of this project, but also to keep working towards establishing IMUNBP as a leading conference in Europe.
It is clear that MUN has significant academic value and offers important learning opportunities, but it is much more than that. Model United Nations represent young people with a passion for geopolitics, individuals eager to discover the world and meet new people. Moreover, MUNs help participants improve their public speaking and social skills within the framework of an extracurricular activity. Taking part in international cooperation is of utmost importance, because the United Nations reminds us that dialogue is the only viable solution to conflict, and the one that can benefit everyone. Every time two or more countries collaborate, the UN's goals come one step closer to being achieved.
We are now facing a very complex world, and taking part in initiatives such as IMUNBP is only the beginning of shaping the future and being able to make a difference.
For the sake of humanity, dialogue, democracy, and diplomacy must become increasingly important in resolving today’s conflicts. It is essential that you, Delegates, come together to share solutions that allow for collaboration and meaningful debate. We have various global organizations that help strengthen this dialogue, which should ultimately benefit all citizens. However, the United Nations is one of the few institutions where every person on Earth is truly represented.
In addition, the world is confronted with multiple challenges that demand urgent and coordinated responses. Organisations such as the United Nations are essential to safeguarding dialogue and promoting democracy across all nations. Through this dialogue and international cooperation, it is vital to seek solutions to brutal wars like those in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as to conflicts in Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and many other regions that equally merit global attention. Furthermore, the consequences of these wars are so severe that they compel people to abandon their homes and seek opportunities in other countries. Furthermore, the United Nations play a fundamental role in addressing other pressing contemporary issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and socio-economic inequalities.
This is why we believe that IMUNBP is a perfect initiative for young minds eager to learn. Here, we have the opportunity to take part in a conference that genuinely mirrors the UN, offering not only valuable experiences but also powerful values.
When it comes to this year’s conference, we encourage you to be prepared for anything and to pack with you extra eagerness to participate and contribute as much as you can to the conference debates and to defend the country you represent as if it were your own. We also encourage you to build friendships that could last a lifetime as you debate while representing the values of your assigned country, always with a spirit of critical thinking. After all, the main goal of both MUNs and the UN is to improve people's lives. We truly hope you have an amazing time at IMUNBP 2025!
Looking forward to seeing you in November,
Àlex Fernàndez Mas
Secretary-General of IMUNBP 2025
